Check out this video produced by Micah of Chippewa Valley Community Television. At PRAJNA we are dedicated to authentic yoga and teach the complete system of Universal Yoga. Below is a description of what is Universal Yoga in a nutshell.
Universal Yoga is a multi-faceted system of techniques that combine all the essential elements/rules of authentic yoga (asana, vinyasa, yogic philosophy, pranayama, pratyhara, dharana, mantra, mudras, and bandhas) that are used to further one's spiritual growth. This system is predicated on the concept of the mayakoshas (sheaths/layers of the human) that include the physical, energetic, emotional, mental, intellectual, bliss and karmic layers.
The purpose of this system is to develop control and balance on each layer, between the layers and between the layers of the individual practitioner and surrounding space (aka the world at large). Through Universal Yoga, the practitioner can use numerous techniques to release patterns of tension and negativity in the body, the breath, the mind and the nervous system as a whole, because in this system, every layer (kosha) has practices and techniques that will help develop control and balance.
Universalists follow four rules that never change: 1) to be karmically free and not to repeat mistakes of others; 2) to be conscious and personally responsible in all circumstances; 3) to be creative on the mat, off the mat and throughout life; and most importantly, 4) to be compassionate, always, to everyone.
A certified Universal Yoga teacher always keeps the authentic goal of yoga in mind when teaching others: The internal takes priority over the external, and through this understanding, every practice/technique of yoga should lead the practitioner to a deeper layer of experience, away from distraction.
